Max Lanier: “The Printer’s DVL was the first press name that Lora and I took when we started to make books and editions while I was working on my undergraduate degree in printmaking at the University of Georgia. The name kinda comes from the old (as in mediaeval) idea of the devil being blamed for things being screwed up with a print job…though it turned out more often than not that the devil wasn’t to blame, just one of the apprentices, so over time the association stuck and apprentices came to be called printers devils. We dropped a few vowels, but we liked the idea, so we used that as our first imprint. Unfortunately, over time, we learned that a number of other art presses had used the Printer’s Devil name, so although ours looked dffrnt on paper, we ended up changing the press name to Oldscratch Books by the early ’90’s.”

Jonah rescripted
By Max Lanier and Lora McDonald
Athens, Georgia: Printer's DVL:, 1989/2023. Edition of 25.

5 x 8". Letterpress printed on handmade paper. Two sets of fold out etchings. Sewn into a handmade paper wrapper. Numbered.

The Printer's DVL states this printing as "a re-telling of the classic fish tale." It is a modern day take on the Biblical Jonah from Tarshish as a yuppie resort to Dallas as the new Nineveh. Jonah is "J" and the big fish is "Mike". The retelling is laced with political and social modern day references. It's a lively rendition of a big fish tale.
